Michael Kors ups the glamour, buys Versace for $2 billion

Sep 25, 2018

NEW YORK — Michael Kors is buying the Italian fashion house Versace in a deal worth more than $2 billion (1.83 billion euros), continuing its hard charge into the world of high-end fashion. The deal Tuesday comes just 14 months after the New York handbag maker spent $1.35 billion adding to its portfolio Jimmy Choo, the shoemaker that rocketed to fame on the high heels of "Sex and the City." Like others in the fashion industry, Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. is trying to fire up sales by cranking up the glamour. Tapestry, once known as Coach, acquired Kate Spade last...

UK Labour opposition party vows to reject May's Brexit deal

Sep 25, 2018

LONDON — Britain's main opposition Labour Party announced Tuesday it will reject Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May's proposed divorce deal with the European Union when it comes to a vote in Parliament and might support a new Brexit referendum. One official said May's government was offering the country a choice between "really bad and even worse." If Britain and the EU agree on a deal, it must be approved by individual EU nations before Britain leaves. In the U.K. that means a vote by lawmakers. The math on that vote looks ominous for May's government, however, because it lacks an...

US home prices rise at slowest pace in nearly a year

Sep 25, 2018

WASHINGTON — U.S. home prices rose in July at the slowest pace in 10 months as home sales have stumbled amid higher mortgage rates. The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-city home price index increased 5.9 percent in July compared with a year earlier, down from a 6.4 percent annual gain in July. Home prices are rising at twice the rate of wages, which has likely contributed to a cooling in the market this year. Sales of existing homes have dropped 1.5 percent in the past 12 months. Mortgage rates last week reached their highest level since May. Las Vegas, Seattle and...

Lebanon's parliament approves Arms Trade Treaty

Sep 25, 2018

BEIRUT — Lebanon's parliament has ratified the international Arms Trade Treaty, angering Hezbollah legislators, some of whom walked out in protest. The 2014 treaty seeks to regulate international trade in conventional arms and prevent illicit trade. Hezbollah legislator Ali Ammar walked out of the parliament Tuesday, saying it "infringes on the weapons of the resistance." After Lebanon's 15-year civil war ended in 1990, Hezbollah was allowed to keep its weapons since it was fighting Israeli forces occupying parts of southern Lebanon. Hezbollah today has a massive arsenal including tens of thousands of rockets and missiles. The group sent thousands of...

Thai police hand over 100 kilos of marijuana for research

Sep 25, 2018

BANGKOK — Thai police on Tuesday handed over around 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of seized marijuana for medical research, as officials seek to produce pot-based medication. Sophon Mekthon, chairman of the Government Pharmaceutical Organization, said researchers chose high-quality marijuana from police to conduct medical research, selecting from batches of seized imported marijuana and taking some local strains of cannabis that police had recently confiscated. He said the marijuana varied in quality and type so researchers could observe which characteristics are most suitable for medicinal purposes. "The Government Pharmaceutical Organization intends to use marijuana, which is a plant that grows well...
